Food Wars

I am really jacked to bring you a guest post from the one and only Moe Vivas of NYC fame. Moe and I have never meant in person but have come to be friends through the magic of the interwebs. He is a deep thinker and an awesome writer. If you’re not reading Moe then go now and fix that dramatic lapse. BTW, we are traveling today about 5 hours away for my wife to have surgery on her leg.–Ken

Food Wars

Imagine that one day, while you were praying, the Word of The Lord comes to you and tells you to wear your “#1 chef” t-shirt and get your best pots and utensils ready, because you’re cooking today!

As you start to gather your ingredients and start the fire, you are told to cook the meal under the fire of human feces. You plead with The Lord and He allows you to use cow dung instead.

You begin mixing the ingredients in the pot and as you look at the food, it seems good, but there’s a stench that makes your stomach cry out in anguish.

As you finish cooking your meal, and prepare your plate, tears begin to form in your eyes as you start to take the first bite. “Why am I eating this”, you think to yourself.

Then The Lord reveals to you that this was a symbol of the defilement which His people will experience by dwelling among the heathen. This meal foretells their captivity; their pollution among the nations of the world; and that they are no longer the holy people to the Lord they had once been.

Let’s call this what it is. Disgusting!

This is how ugly sin is.

Sin has the power of taking something that is pure, holy and perfect and defile it in such a way that it transforms into something ugly, dirty and disgusting. This is the food that has been eaten for generations. This is the same food that has defiled the human soul.

We’ve all sat at the table of the one who promised us a fine meal, only to be cooked under the waste of his very own sin. He’s the chef and he now offers his own waste for food. He offered it to Eve, Adam and to every one that came after them. And we have wasted no time partaking of it.

It’s time for a better meal!

The master chef has made an entree and he has something perfect to offer:

“On this mountain the Lord Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples,a banquet of aged wine—the best of meats and the finest of wines” Isaiah 25:6

Jesus, the one who was without sin, came to make things right. He saw how terrible it is for the crown of his creation to sit at the table of the enemy and eat the waste that he offers. So he did what was needed to offer a better meal. He gave His life to give us the best!

The meal that The Lord offers is filled with rich food, aged wine and the best meat cooked in heavenly fire. No more dung, no more sin, nothing awful to spoil the goods. He has made it all perfect. And we are invited to the table.

Perhaps you are afraid to approach this table and wish you can offer something to bring. But you reach in your pockets and all you find is lint. No money, no dessert, no bread. It feels terrible to come empty handed. But then you are reminded:

“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters;and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare” – Isaiah 55:1-2

You take the offer, and you sit at the table. You are still embarrassed, but you realize that this is exactly how He wants it. When you look around you, the table is filled with people… just like you. So you grab your utensils and take the first bite. Then you realize that you have never tasted food like this. Food that brings with it a promise:

“On this mountain he will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples, the sheet that covers all nations; he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth. The Lord has spoken.” – Isaiah 25:7-8

This food, this table, this mountain is where you belong. If you dare, I invite you to have a seat, this is home.

The master Chef has won… and so have we!

Have you been sitting at the wrong table? Do you find yourself wandering around tempted by a sub-par meal?
